Capital Bank, one of Haiti's largest private commercial banks, has been dealing with an IT outage since Friday, October 2. Its branches, online banking and several ATMs have been affected. Since October 5, the ransomware group LockBit 5.0 has listed the bank among its victims.
What the bank has said
Capital Bank first described the disruption as IT work. In a notice dated October 4, it spoke of a "technical incident" affecting access to the application servers that connect to its core banking system.
A gradual reopening of branches planned for October 7 was postponed. The bank said its checks needed more time before operations could resume securely, and it has not announced a new date.
The bank says its customers' data is not affected. It has not confirmed a cyberattack, or any link between the outage and LockBit.
What LockBit claims
Since October 5, the bank's name has appeared on services that track ransomware leak sites. SOCRadar lists Capital Bank as "claimed"; Hackmanac marks the claim as pending verification. According to sources cited by RHINEWS, the group says it holds bank data and threatens to publish it around October 19.
None of this has been independently verified. Ransomware groups sometimes list victims they did not breach, or overstate what they took.
What customers can do
- Expect calls, texts and emails that use the news to look legitimate. The bank will not ask for your password or PIN.
- Watch your account activity once online banking is back.
- Follow the bank's official channels for the reopening date.
We will update this post as the bank or investigators share more.
